Quando Michael Cuesta se estreou em 2001 com “L.I.E.” demonstrava já uma habilidade e um cuidado pouco habituais na abordagem ao complexo universo adolescente: parecia conhecer-lhe os recantos mais obscuros, sabia dar voz às necessidades dos seus jovens protagonistas, e fazia-o escapando às armadilhas mais gratuitas. TWELVE AND HOLDING aparece, então, com uma espécie de extensão de “L.I.E.” já que, tal como este último, se constrói a partir do olhar de um trio de miúdos (Jacob, Malee e Leonard) que tentam sobreviver à morte de Rudy, o irmão gémeo de Jacob, falecido na sequência de um incêndio. TWELVE AND HOLDING observa com argúcia a sua dor e vontade de vingança, mas também as suas expectativas e fantasias.

Rudy and Jacob Carges are two twin boys who are best friends, yet completely different. Rudy is athletic, brave and charismatic while his twin Jacob is quiet, timid and deeply affected by the unsightly birthmark on his face. Malee, a precocious only child of a single, emotionally detached mother, and Leonard, an overweight boy from an obese family, make up the twins' close-knit group of friends. When Rudy dies in a fire, Jacob, Malee and Leonard each deal with this tragic event in different ways. Malee, who thinks that she is mature enough to deal with her feelings on her own, becomes obsessively fascinated with one of her mother's patients, Gus. Leonard loses his sense of taste and proceeds to adopt a strict diet and exercise regime, which he tries to force onto his family as well. Jacob, who feels that he let his brother down by not going with him that night to the tree house, must deal with his own guilt, anger and feelings of inadequacy and betrayal...

Estudou fotografia e literatura na Escola de Artes Visuais de Nova Iorque. Iniciou a sua carreira como fotógrafo de cena e realizador de publicidade. Estreou-se na longa-metragem como argumentista e realizador com L.I.E, em 2001. Desde aí, dirigiu já vários episódios da série televisiva “Sete Palmos de Terra”. TWELVE AND HOLDING é o seu segundo filme.

Studied photography and literature at the School of Visual Arts in New York before starting a career as a still photographer and commercial director. His first feature as screenwriter and director was the widely acclaimed L.I.E. (01). Since then he has directed several episodes of the TV series “Six Feet Under.” TWELVE AND HOLDING is his second feature film.

“I really wanted to explore the gap that’s created when adults become wrapped up in their own grief and insecurities. The kids in the movie are forming their own ideas of how to navigate their insecurities, grief, and sexuality with no help from the parents. I wanted to explore the journey children have to make on their own.”
