Nas eleições de 1999 na Áustria, Jorg Haider, candidato da extrema-direita, recebeu mais de um quarto dos votos e tornou-se no segundo maior partido austríaco. A Europa ficava em choque e em Viena, quatro realizadores, Michael Glawogger, Barbara Albert, Ulrich Seidl e Michael Sturminger, intrigados e alarmados com estes resultados, saíram para a rua, armados com as suas câmaras, para sondarem a população e tentar perceber as razões por trás desta situação inquietante. Através de seis retratos, descobrem um país não muito diferente de tantos outros. Mas, embora os seus habitantes pareçam pessoas normais, as suas opiniões revelam-se preocupantes e perturbadoras: os austríacos entrevistados são homofóbicos, anti-semitas, xenófobos, contra a emancipação, e desinteressados das questões políticas.

In the Austrian elections of October 1999, Jorg Haider's extreme right wing FPO party received more than a quarter of the vote and became the second largest party in the country. Four helmers, intrigued and alarmed, take their cameras to the streets, to try and find out the reasons behind this unsettling situation. Through six portraits, they discover a country not so different from many others. But, though its population seems quite normal, their opinions appear to be worrying and disturbing: the interviewed Austrians are homophobic, anti-Semitic, xenophobic, anti-emancipation, and not interested in politics.
