When a woman rents a miserably tiny room, she finds mountains of belongings from the previous tenant, "Anthony," as well as a backlog of messages on the machine from the landlord, his mother, and disparate acquaintances. As she cleans up the place, she begins to experience uncanny visions, nightmares, and the feeling that Anthony is much closer than she imagined. Terror haunts her sweaty-summer mind as she ritualistically cleans the room, strips to old-fashioned bra and panties, climbs in the fridge to cool down, and makes pudding.

Reynolds e Jolley conheceram-se em 1995 durante o curso da Escola de artes Visuais em Manhattan. A Reynolds, que nasceu no Alasca e vive em Nova Iorque, interessava-lhe a realização numa óptica multidisciplinar. Jolley, um irlandês que divide o sue tempo entre Nova Iorque e Londres, estava essencialmente interessado em fotografia. Juntos fizeram três curtas-metragensm, embora continuem a trabalhar nos seus projectos individuais. SUGAR é a sua primeira longametragem.

Reynolds and Jolley met in 1995 in the graduate program of the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. Reynolds, who was born in Alaska and lives in New York, was concentrating on filmmaking in the multidisciplinary program. Jolley, an Irishman who now splits his time between New York and London, was primarily interested in photography. Together they have made three short films. Today they both continue to work on their own projects. SUGAR is their first feature-length film.

"SUGAR foi rodado sem guião durante um período de vários meses. Filmávamos um pouco, víamos os resultados, e depois discutíamos o que se passaria a seguir. Fizemos quase tudo sozinhos, trabalhando quase sem uma equipa. Embrenhámonos, de forma estranha, no processo que teve a sua própria energia. Agora, parece que foi o trabalho que nos carregou e não o contrário."

"SUGAR was shot without script over a period of several months. We would shoot some, watch the results, then the three of us would discuss what would happen next. We did everything ourselves, working almost completely without crew. This made a strange immersive process that gathered its own momentum. Now it feels sometimes like the work led us rather than we led the film."
