Esta é, para muitos, uma colaboração de sonho. O provocador e celebrado artista visual Matthew Barney uniu-se à sua mulher, a cantora islandesa Björk, para este DRAWING RESTRAINT 9, o regresso de Barney ao cinema depois do ciclo de cinco filmes “Cremaster”. Passado quase integralmente a bordo de um baleeiro japonês, o Nisshin Maru, DRAWING RESTRAINT 9 divide-se em duas narrativas distintas e paralelas. Por um lado, acompanhamos a construção de uma enigmática escultura com uma geleia de petróleo, e por outro assistimos a um longo ritual japonês de que Barney e Björk (que também assina a banda-sonora) são os protagonistas. DRAWING RESTRAINT 9 é, então, o resultado do encontro de duas mentes admiráveis: uma história de amor como apenas estes dois artistas seriam capazes de a conceber.

At a Japanese oil refinery, a truck loaded with hot petroleum jelly is paraded from the factory to the harbor. The procession, led by animals, is flanked by hundreds of rejoicing Japanese as it arrives abreast an enormous whaling ship where the jelly is pumped into a mold on deck. The ship departs, and during the weeks of the voyage, the mass of petroleum jelly cools. Meanwhile, below deck, a western couple are falling in love as they are served bowls of tea. As the voyage ensues, the tea room slowly fills up with warm fluid. The western couple become enveloped in the fluid and slowly transform. As the ship reaches the Southern Ocean, amongst a backdrop of luminous icebergs we behold the de-moulding of the sculpture...

pelo “Cremaster Cycle” (1994-2002), composto de cinco filmes.

"Pensei que ao trabalhar com a Björk seria mais fácil contar uma história de amor, que era também o que queria fazer. Queria que a peça funcionasse como uma história de amor, mas creio que o nosso interesse em trabalhar juntos nisto teve mais a ver com o facto de ser um tema com o qual ambos nos relacionávamos – esta relação com a natureza."

“I thought that working with Björk would make it easier to tell a love story, which I also wanted to do. I wanted the piece to operate as a love story, but I believe that our interest in working together on this was probably more to do with the fact that its subject matter that we can both really relate to - this relationship to nature.”
