YANG BAN XI - THE 8 MODELWORKS é uma proposta irresistível. A sua realizadora leva-nos numa viagem ao passado, à China dos anos da Revolução Cultural, e dá-nos a conhecer o único pão e circo permitido ao povo pela Senhora Mao: um conjunto de oito óperas, conhecidas como Yang Ban Xi. Baseadas em histórias tradicionais chinesas e adaptadas ao “requintado” gosto de Jiang Qing Min (a tal senhora Mao), apresentavam o mundo de uma forma muito simples: os “bons” eram sempre camponeses e soldados revolucionários, e os “maus” eram latifundiários anti-revolucionários. Claro que Yang Ban Xi era pura propaganda, mas, reconheça-se, feita com as mais modernas técnicas de encenação e com números de dança e música absolutamente notáveis. Hoje, estas óperas ganharam popularidade entre as gerações mais novas, tendo voltado às salas e disponíveis em versões karaoke.

A journey to the past and to the China of the Cultural Revolution years. The Yang Ban Xi are a series of propagandist operas created under the watchful eye of Jiang Qin, Mrs. Mao Zedong, and were the only artistic works exhibited in the country's theaters and on its television and radio broadcasts. Based in traditional chinese stories, the world view of these plays was very simples: happy, healthy field workers and soldiers versus shady squinting land owners and other anti-revolutionaries. Nowadays the Yang Ban Xi’s have regained popularity and are performed for delighted audiences consisting of the now middle-aged Chinese who were teenagers during the heyday of the propaganda opera, taking along their children to watch.

Nasceu em Hong Kong, na China. Aos 5 anos, os seus pais mudaram-se para a Europa, onde cresceu e estudou. Completou o curso de Ciências da Comunicação na Universidade de Amesterdão. Yuen estreou-se na realização em 2001 com a curta documental ‘Chin.Ind.: Life behind the serving hatch’, nomeada para os Prémios de Cinema Holandeses. YANG BAN XI, THE 8 MODEL WORKS é o seu segundo trabalho e estreou no festival de Sundance, em 2005, na competição mundial de documentários.

Born in Hong Kong, China. At the age of 5 her parents moved to Europe, where she grew up and received her education. She graduated from the University of Amsterdam with a masters degree in Communication Sciences. Yuen made her director’s debut in 2001 with the short documentary ‘Chin.Ind.: Life behind the serving hatch’ which was nominated for the National Dutch Film Award. Her second film is the feature documentary YANG BAN XI, THE 8 MODEL WORKS, which premiered at the Sundance Film festival 2005, in the world documentary competition.
