Em 2005, foi diagnosticado a Neil Young um aneurisma. Antes da operação, Young refugiou-se em Nashville e compôs um dos seus mais lancinantes álbuns, um ciclo memorável de canções enraizadas nas suas experiências e memórias. A cirurgia correu bem e, alguns meses mais tarde, Neil Young regressou a Nashville para duas noites de concerto no Ryman Auditorium com a sua banda, a mulher (Pegi Young) e Emmylou Harris. Antes, Young ligou ao realizador Jonathan Demme e instruiu-o: “Vou tirar um ano de férias, mas quero fazer um filme”. Demme aceitou o repto e daí nasceu este NEIL YOUNG: HEART OF GOLD, que regista e imortaliza os concertos de Nashville, onde as canções mais recentes e o seu material mais antigo se diluem, criando uma panorâmica da vida de Neil Young. Recordações e a iminência da morte entrelaçam-se de forma subtil e poética ao longo de todo o filme, num trabalho de absoluta discrição e eficácia do realizador Demme.

An intimate musical portrait of legendary singer/songwriter Neil Young, filmed on the occasion of the world premiere of Young’s “Prairie Wind” concert at Nashville’s hallowed Ryman Auditorium last summer. Young’s music provides an emotionally rich view into this unique artist’s relationship to family, friends, mortality, and the passage of time. Young is accompanied onstage by many long time musical companions, including country star Emmylou Harris, Neil’s wife Pegi Young, and bandleader/steel guitarist Ben Keith.

Nasceu em Nova Iorque, nos EUA, em 1944. É realizador e produtor. Demme foi duas vezes considerado Melhor Realizador pelo Círculo de Críticos de Nova Iorque, com os filmes “Melvin and Howard” e “Silence of the Lambs”. No total, os seus filmes foram nomeados 20 vezes para os Óscares. “Silence of the Lambs” recebeu 5 Óscares em 1991 – Melhor Filme, Melhor Realizador, Melhor Actor, Melhor Actriz e Melhor Argumento Adaptado.

Born in New York, USA, in 1944. He’s a director and producer. Demme was twice named Best Director by the New York Film Critics, for “Melvin and Howard” and for “The Silence of the Lambs”. Demme’s films have been nominated for 20 Academy Awards. “The Silence of the Lambs” received five Academy Awards in 1991 – for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay Adaptation.
