Bastaram quatro álbuns de originais e um curtíssimo período de vida (5 anos – de 1982 a 1987) para transformar os ingleses The Smiths num dos maiores fenómenos da história da pop. A guitarra de Johnny Marr combinada com o timbre único da voz de Morrissey encontrava a correspondência perfeita nos temas da banda de Manchester, exemplos de notável inteligência e humor mordaz, que acumulavam teenage angst, ambiguidade sexual e um catálogo interminável de frustrações. Surpreendente é descobrir que, vinte anos depois, o seu legado encontrou um grupo de fãs entre a comunidade hispânica de Los Angeles. IS IT REALLY SO STRANGE?, do americano William E. Jones, documenta este achado através de entrevistas a vários destes jovens, onde eles falam abertamente sobre a razão e o significado do seu culto em torno da banda inglesa e de Morrissey.

November 2001. First evening of “London is Dead”, a Morrisey and Smiths tribute night at Fais Do-do, in Los Angeles. A large crowd of happy fans is dancing and singing around to the sound of the Manchester based band and its front man, Moz. The crowd average age must be 20-years-old and they are, in their majority, Hispanics and Latinos. Twenty years after the Smiths ending, how can one explain this surprising cult based in the eastern suburbs of LA? Their young admirers speak at length about their admiration, their relation with its music and their lives.
