PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID é, a par de “The Wild Bunch”, um dos filmes mais célebres de Sam Peckinpah. Retrato da cultura de fronteira americana, Peckinpah realça aqui os contornos da crise espiritual e desespero conta de uma nação à mercê dos grandes negócios e dos políticos corruptos. Em fundo, a história de Pat Garrett e Billy the Kid, outrora dois bons amigos, agora em lados diferentes da lei. Pat Garrett foi promovido a xerife e faz parte do sistema que Billy detesta com todas as suas forças. Quando estreou em Julho de 1973, PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID foi acusado por vários críticos de cinema de ser um filme incoerente. Na verdade, durante a rodagem, Sam Peckinpah entrara em guerra aberta contra a MGM, de tal forma que o estúdio o proibira de filmar certas cenas, que Peckinpah acabou por rodar. Quinze anos após o lançamento de PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID, e 4 sobre a morte do realizador, o filme foi restaurado e foram adicionados mais 16 minutos de cenas, que permitem assistir a esta obra como o seu autor a imaginara inicialmente.

Pat Garrett and Billy were once friends. Now one of them is on the side of the law and the other an outlaw. As a sheriff, Pat Garrett has been integrated into the system that Billy hates with all his heart. “It feels like times have changed!” proclaims Pat Garrett at the beginning of the film; “Times maybe. Not me!”, is the Kid’s response. But it’s the landowners who rule things now. And they can bend the rules any way they want. The longer he takes to track down Billy the Kid, the more Pat Garrett begins to understand his erstwhile friend. When the search culminates, the hunter has long since become the mirror image of the hunted. And when Pat Garrett finally shoots Billy the Kid, it is an act of self-betrayal tantamount to suicide. PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID was released in July 1973 to mixed reviews. many critics complained the film was incoherent. Unfortunately, during shooting open warfare broke out between Peckinpah and MGM. The studio forbid Peckinpah to shoot certain scenes, but the director defied them and shot them anyway. Fifteen years after its initial release, and four years after Peckinpah's death, the film was restored and 16 minutes were added.

Nasceu em Fresno na Califórnia a 28 de Fevereiro de 1925. Foi realizador, argumentista, produtor e actor. Depois de ter cumprido o serviço militar na Marinha, estudou na Universidade da Califórnia do Sul. Começou por escrever westerns para a televisão; o seu primeiro western para cinema foi “The Deadly Companions”, em 1961. Muitos dos seus filmes só chegaram às salas após cortes exigidos pelos estúdios. As versões longas dos seus filmes só foram conhecidas após a sua morte, por ataque cardíaco, a 28 de Dezembro de 1984.

Born in Fresno in California on 28.2.1925. He was a director, writer, producer and an actor. Having spent his military service in the marines, he went on to study at the University of Southern California. He first wrote scripts for television Westerns; his first big screen Western was THE DEADLY COMPANIONS, made in 1961. Many of his films only found their way into cinemas after studio demands for cuts had been met. These films were not re-released in their intended version until after the director’s death. Sam Peckinpah died of heart failure on 28.12.1984.
