SNOW, segunda longa-metragem de Hakan Sahin (realizador canadiano nascido na Turquia) é um objecto inclassificável: destila surrealismo e magia, e cruza David Lynch, os irmãos Coen de “Fargo” e a bizarria da série televisiva “No Fim do Mundo”. As paisagens belas e geladas do Canadá são o cenário deste filme, que segue um dia na vida de Loeffen e do seu cão Blackie. Loeffen, que trabalha numa plataforma petrolífera, tem que viajar de carro até Zama para comprar mantimentos para os seus colegas. Zama é uma minúscula cidade, perdida no meio da floresta e longe das auto-estradas, pequena demais para ter uma estação de correios ou um banco, mas suficientemente grande para ter uma cafetaria e até uma loja de presentes. Mas Loeffen não consegue deixar de sentir um certo contentamento em afastar-se, por um dia, da sua rotina. E este não é um dia qualquer: celebra-se o solstício de Inverno, o dia mais curto e a noite mais longa do ano, mas também o renascimento do Sol.

It takes certain breed of men and women to live and work in such an environment. The cold, the darkness and the isolation affects each one in different ways. Life seems to loose some of its essential components in these conditions, where sometimes the distinction between what is real and what is surreal disappear... Loeffen, and his beloved dog companion Blackie are about to drive to the nearest settlement Zama, some 150 miles away. It will take him the full daylight time to drive and buy supplies for the rig crew. He can not help but feel giddy about his trip; just to escape the work and the elements; to get away from the routine, even if it happens to be for the shortest day of the year. Zama is isolated in the woods and far from the highways. It makes no sense to an outsider to consider Zama as a destination of any sort but for Loeffen it is a welcome change if nothing else. This small settlement in the middle of nowhere gives Loeffen more than he bargained, as fate and destiny conspire to bring him to an isolated cabin outside Zama for one bitterly cold night - the longest night of the year.

Hakan Sahin nasceu em Ünye, na Turquia, em 1965, e emigrou com a sua família para o Canadá com 15 anos. Aos 25, licenciou-se em Engenharia de Computadores na Universidade de Alberta. Juntou-se ao seu irmão no negócio de família (uma pequena empresa de camiões) que operava a partir de um longínquo campo de petróleo, em Zama, na Alberta do Norte. Aí permaneceu durante cinco anos, como condutor de camiões. Aos 30 anos, realiza a sua primeira curta-metragem em 16 mm, “Mirror”. Cinco anos depois, faz uma versão longa de “Mirror2 em 35 mm. SNOW é a sua segunda longa-metragem.

Born in Ünye, Turkey in 1965, he immigrated to Canada with his family when he was 15 years old. At the age of 25, he graduated from the University of Alberta in Edmonton with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering. He joined his brother in a small family trucking business operating out of a remote oil-field hamlet of Zama in Northern Alberta. He worked there for the next five years as a truck driver. He trained himself in film making by shooting his first short film Mirror in 16mm when he was 30 years old. He went on to shoot feature length version of Mirror in 35mm five years later. Snow is his second feature film.

They are not polished, smooth, articulate and witty, they make mistakes just as in life. They are genuine.”
