No Festival de Tribeca, em 2005, obteve o prémio para Melhor Primeira Obra. As comparações (elogiosas) com Hal Hartley (atente-se nos diálogos), Lucrecia Martel (pela consciência de classe), ou mesmo Almodovar (veja-se as cores fulgurantes), multiplicam-se. PLAY, da chilena Alicia Scherson, é um conto de fadas urbano com Santiago do Chile em fundo. Cristina é uma jovem enfermeira acabada de chegar à grande cidade. Os seus dias incluem cuidar de Don Milo, um velho e moribundo imigrante húngaro, jogar “Street Fighter”, e flirtar com um jardineiro. Tristán é um arquitecto de 33 anos que vive numa casa luxuosa, e que está prestes a perder tudo: a mulher, o emprego, a mala e o seu IPod. As vidas de Tristán e Cristina cruzam-se quando esta encontra a mala daquele. Escutando a música dele e fumando os seus cigarros, Cristina começa a seguir Tristán. Tem então início uma comédia existencialista invulgar, onde o trabalho sonoro e musical desempenham um papel fundamental.

Cristina, a young nurse from the countryside with big eyes and even bigger headphones, walks the streets of Santiago like a silver ball in a pinball machine, shooting from one person's life to another's. When she is not reading National Geographic articles to her elderly Hungarian patient Milos or flirting with a gardener in the park, she is following Tristán Greenberg , a 33-year-old architect whose wallet she finds after he is mugged. Tristán, who is temporarily unemployed while the construction workers on his project are on strike, has been dumped by his too-perfect girlfriend Irene , who it turns out is also worth following. With nowhere to go, he returns to the suburban home where he grew up, but his glamorous mother Laura is living with a sleazy magician and is soon throwing a pool party straight out of The Graduate.

Nasceu em Santiago do Chile em 1974. Depois de terminar a licenciatura em Biologia, vai estudar cinema na Escuela de Cine, em Cuba. Em 1999, ganha uma bolsa Fulbright para estudar nos Estados Unidos. Aí, obtém o mestrado em Belas Artes pela Universidade de Illinois, em Chicago. As suas curtas-metragens já foram exibidas em inúmeros festivais internacionais, tendo aí ganho múltiplos prémios. Em 2002, Alicia Scherson regressa a Santiago, onde começa a trabalhar como professora de cinema. PLAY é a sua primeira longa-metragem.

Alicia Scherson was born in Santiago de Chile in 1974. After graduating as a biologist, she studied film making in the Escuela de Cine de Cuba, EICTV. In 1999 she went to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship, where she obtained her Master.
