PAVEE LACKEEN é a primeira obra do fotógrafo inglês Perry Ogden. E é também a fotografia que está na origem deste filme multi-premiado, quando, há cinco anos, Ogden lançou um álbum fotográfico, “The Pony Kids”, que documentava a experiência das crianças pobres de Dublin. Depois, e sem qualquer ensaio anterior em cinema, Perry Ogden lançou-se neste retrato poderoso dos Viajantes, uma comunidade nómada irlandesa que vive em “roulottes” numa zona industrial degradada. Combinando ficção e documentário, e recusando a tentação do exotismo, PAVEE LACKEEN segue, ao longo de várias semanas, a jovem Viajante Winnie nas suas deambulações pela próspera e moderna Dublin (num impressionante jogo de contrastes com as condições de insuportável pobreza que os Viajantes têm de suportar), e a luta diária da sua mãe, Rosie, face à burocracia sem rosto, à marginalização e à persistência dos preconceitos que os aliena.

Pavee Lackeen tells the story of Winnie, a ten year old Irish Traveller girl, who lives with her mother and siblings in a ramshackle trailer on the side of the road in a desolate industrialized area of Dublin. The film follows Winnie through several weeks of her life as she struggles for her identity as a young Traveller girl in contemporary Ireland. Winnie fills her time wandering through the run-down shops and stalls of Dublin's inner city, while her mother Rosie struggles to get her family housed by the local council. Pavee Lackeen presents an unflinching portrait of a marginalized community often living in Third World poverty in a modern, prosperous Ireland. The Travelling people of Ireland maintain a culture and language which sets them apart from the rest of the population, and have been the victims of much misunderstanding and prejudice that continues to this day. Shattering existing stereotypes, Pavee Lackeen presents an intimate portrait of a resilient and spirited young girl and her proud, dignified family struggling day by day against faceless bureaucracy, poverty and prejudice.

Nasceu em Shrosphire, em Inglaterra, e cresceu em Londres. Tem trabalhado em fotografia comercial de forma a sustentar os seus projectos pessoas, que incluem o álbum fotográfico “Pony Kids, e o livro e exposição “7 Reece Mews”. PAVEE LACKEEN é o seu primeiro filme.

Born in Shropshire, England, and grew up in London. He has worked in commercial photography to support his more personal photo projects, which include the book “Pony Kids” and the book and exhibition “7 Reece Mews.” PAVEE LACKEEN is his first film.

"Este filme é uma mistura: um pequeno guião de vinte páginas, alguma improvisação e ‘cinema-verité’. Depois de ter estado uma dúzia de dias a filmar, eu e o co-argumentista reescrevemos o argumento para evitar caricaturas. Escolhi actores não-profissionais para assegurar a autenticidade, e a rodagem durou dez meses. O que me atraiu nos Viajantes irlandeses foi o tema da discriminação, pessoas que crescem numa comunidade afastada do resto da sociedade.”

“The film is a mix: a short script of twenty pages, some improvisation and cinema-verité. After a dozen of days filming, we reworked the screenplay with my co-writer to avoid caricatures. I chose nonprofessional actors to ensure authenticity, and the shooting lasted ten months. What attracted me about the subject matter of Irish Travellers was the theme of discrimination, people growing up in a community apart from the rest of society.”
