LONGING é como um voo rasante aos detalhes da vida privada. Markus e Ella vivem numa pequena cidade, não muito longe de Berlim. Estão juntos desde crianças e são inseparáveis. Markus é mecânico e bombeiro voluntário. Ella trabalha algumas horas por dia como empregada doméstica e canta num coro. A sua felicidade é, porém, ameaçada. Um dia, durante uma visita a um quartel de bombeiros, Markus, depois de uma noite bem regada, acorda na cama de outra mulher. Mal conseguindo lembrar-se dos acontecimentos, empreende todos os esforços para evitar Rose, mas acaba por iniciar uma relação com ela. Mas esta ligação não muda o amor que sente por Ella – nem por um momento. E o peso da infidelidade vai-se tornando um fardo cada vez mais difícil de carregar. Com brio e rigor, a estreante Valeska Grisebach constrói neste seu primeiro filme um retrato poderoso das complexidades uma relação, apoiada pela interpretação notável de um grupo de actores não-profissionais.

A man and a woman live in a village near Berlin. The city seems far away. They've loved each other since they were children. Inseparable. They're now both in their early thirties. Markus is a metalworker and a member of the local fire brigade. Ella works a couple of hours a week as a domestic and sings is the local choir. People eye them with a mixture of astonishment and suspicion: They seem so happy, so innocent - and sometimes clueless as two children. Markus visits the nearest town to attend a training course with his fire brigade. That night there's a lot of drinking, laughing and dancing. The next morning Markus wakes up in the apartment of the waitress, Rose. He can't recall much of what happened. When he tries to find out, it's the beginning of a love for his wife.

Nasceu em Bremen, em 1968, e cresceu em Berlim. Estudou Filosofia e Língua e Literatura Alemã em Berlim, Munique e Viena, seguido de estudos na Academia de Cinema de Viena, onde foi aluna de peter Patzak. Aluna convidada na Academia Alemã de Cinema e televisão, em Berlim, completou o seu filme de final de curso, “Mein
Stern”, em 2001.

Born in Bremen in 1968, she grew up in Berlin. She studied philosophy and German language and literature in Berlin, Munich and Vienna, followed by studies at the Viennese Film Academy, where she was taught by Peter Patzak. A guest student at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin, she made her graduation film, “Mein Stern”, in 2001.

"Mais do que a vida concreta e visível que cada um de nós leva, aquilo que sempre me interessou foi as outras vidas que existem apenas na nossa imaginação: ser outro, noutro lugar, ter conhecido outra pessoa, ter tomado outra decisão, ou ser mais corajoso... Para mim a "saudade" é um sentimento muito pessoal: um poder selvagem que pode dizer muito de uma pessoa, mas que também pode conter um adeus agridoce, algo amaldiçoado. Por vezes, esta vida é demasiado pequena.”

"Aside from the concrete, visible life one leads, I've always been moved by the number of other lives that exist only in one's imagination: If one were in another place, or had met another person, made a different decision, or were daring enough... For me”longing“ is a very personal feeling: a wild power that can say a lot about a person, but which can also contain a bittersweet hint of farewell, of something forsaken. Sometimes this one life is too small."
