GRAIN IN EAR, segunda obra de Zhang Lu é como uma delicada peça de câmara estilizada e poética, e de ritmo cuidado e harmonioso. O filme de Lu detém-se em Cui Shunji, uma jovem mãe coreana a viver à margem da sociedade chinesa. Com o marido na prisão e uma criança pequena para sustentar, nada mais resta a Cui senão continuar a vender kimchi (um prato coreano muito popular no nordeste da China) numa roulotte ilegal a trabalhadores fabris ao longo de uma estrada industrial desolada. Quando tudo finalmente parece estar a correr bem (com o início de uma relação e a legalização da sua actividade graças à ajuda de um polícia), Shunji apercebe-se da fragilidade da sua situação e decide-se por uma vingança impiedosa.

Cui Shunji is a Chinese woman of Korean ancestry. A single mother bringing up a young son, she lives away from her hometown, and makes a living by selling Kimchi, a Korean style pickle. An unlicensed vendor, she is constantly on the run, pursued by the local commercial prosecutor. Kim is also an ethnic Korean. He and Cui fall in love, but Kim is a married man; their love can only be an underground affair. Police officer Sergeant Wang is Cui's regular customer. Taking pity on her, he helps her get a business permit. Life seems promising for Cui. When their love affair is disclosed, Kim, under pressure to save his marriage, claims that Cui is a prostitute. She is arrested and subsequently raped in a police station by the drunken and soon-to-be married Sergeant Wang. Released from custody, Cui, in the face of shame and humiliation, continues her pickle business. Sergeant Wang and his fiancé also continue to buy from her. The fiancé even orders pickles from her for their wedding. Her son's death sends her into total despair. She puts poison in the pickles destined for Sergeant Wang's wedding.

Nasceu em 1962. Completou o curso de Literatura Chinesa na Universidade Yanbian, em in Jilin-Sheng, na China. Em 1982 lança o seu primeiro romance, “Cicada Chirping Afternoon”, sob o pseudóni,o de Gan MingTai. Seguem-se “Synopsis”, em 1988, uma antologia de contos (Work”), em 1995, e novo romance, “Truthful Fiction”, em 2000. Em 2003, realiza a sua primeira longa-metragem, “Tang Poetry”.

In 1986 debuted with the novel ‘Cicada Chirping Afternoon’ by the pen name Gan MingTai, followed by “Synopsis” (1988), the short stories anthology “Work” in 1995, and the novel “Truthful Fiction”, in 2000. In 2003, Zhang Lu directed his first feature film, “Tang Poetry”.

“I would call this film an "antiterrorism" film. "Terrorism" here does not have a specific political meaning. It refers to the tragedy resulting from the tensions between the powerful and powerless, the haves and have-nots, and the oppressor and the oppressed. As a poor woman and a member of an ethnic minority, Cui Shunji is a typically downtrodden character. She lives at the bottom of society."
